Picture Perfect

I love photographs. I love that they capture single instances amid millions. I especially love candid photos. The ones that immortalize foreground, background, and middleground, and tell stories the photographer never knew he was about to tell. The kind that invoke memories of minute details, otherwise forgotten.

I'm not crazy about formally posed pictures, or photos that give the impression that one's life is perfect. I prefer a dash of reality. Or two.

Know what else I love? Fishing.

I love it so much, that I was obliged to take 463 photos of a recent Shufolk fishing expedition. An event that took all of two hours. That's more than 1 photo per minute, I believe.

If I were techno-savvy, believe me when I tell you that I would splice them all together for an old school moving film of our entire experience.

The only thing missing would be me, taking the pictures.

Luckily, after all the fish were caught, Ty wrenched the camera from my grip and told me to get in on the action.

His casual picture-taking style produced some of my favorite, most story-telling pictures of the day:

(In case you can't read between the pixels, this story goes, "Oh, ha ha! Look what a happy family we are, standing in meadows, laughing all the time and...Samera! That's enough! I'm trying to document this joyful moment, and you're making it very difficult. Get back here and look happy so generations to come will see what a loving mother I am! Now lean in and really work the 'I love you, Mom' angle. That's better.")

A little reality goes a long way, as it turns out.

I love those photos! You guys caught a lot of fish! You captured some fun moments. I have pictures of myself doing the same thing, "Get you bum over hear and smile for heaven sake!"
I love that you put life jackets on your kids--very smart--then your hands are free to take pictures instead of trying to hang on to them so's they don't drown.

Cute mom, cute kids! Candid snapshots are the best. Unless they're of me scowling/blinking/chewing/showing my double chin, but other than that, love them! :)

You and your family are adorable. Beautiful area too. Makes me want to go camping or something. As long as it is in a cabin with a comfy bed and full bathroom.
