A Long-Awaited Post(um)

Oh, are you wondering what I did last night on Halloween Eve?

You're not?

Well, I'm going to tell you anyway, because it was incredible.

At first it was exactly the same as every night:

Kids in bed, kitchen cleaned up, reclining downstairs.

To waste a couple hours in front of the TV.

Only, this time I made myself a little snack first.

A snack that changed the course of history. At least MY history.

And because I am feeling magnanimous, I will share it with you, my loyal (where 'loyal' is synonymous with 'imaginary') blog followers.

Even though I know for a fact that not one of you will be capable of replicating it. Not for a lack of trying, but only for a lack of access to Postum, the necessary secret ingredient.

What is Postum, you ask?

What is Postum!?, I counter, with a look of disgust.

Postum is only the most wonderful drink mix of my childhood!

It smells a little like coffee (and if you know me, you know that I enjoy no other smell quite as much as that of coffee - except that of Postum), it looks a lot like coffee, but it is actually not coffee. It is tiny black crystals of wheat bran and molasses. It is meant to be dissolved in boiling water, and then sweetened to taste. My grandma used to serve it with breakfast, and I adore it.

Problem is, its manufacture was discontinued several years ago.

Lucky for me, I have a jar in my cabinet. It expired in '07, but I don't care. I use it sparingly, as I am convinced that when it is gone, my life as I know it will be over.

And last night, when I was rummaging around for something to put on my ice cream, the Postum practically jumped off the shelf and begged for consideration.

And so I considered. Boy, howdy, did I ever consider! I considered the crap out of that Postum.

This is what happened:

vanilla bean ice cream
unsweetened shredded coconut (the tiny, crunchy kind)
walnuts
caramel sauce
Postum

And I will never be the same.

Especially when I run out of Postum!

So I am leading a march on Washington to bring back Postum.

I know not what that means, nor what it entails, but who's with me?
